Information related to using Waze in the State of Maryland.

Cities and towns

There are 157 incorporated places in Maryland. When assigning the city name to a road segment or landmark, use the name of the CDP (census-designated place) or incorporated place. If it is outside the boundaries of either of those, set the city name as None. If the road acts as the border between two named places, then (TO BE DETERMINED). Do not use the names associated with ZIP codes or the name of a neighborhood, community, or subdivision. If the road type is Freeway, set the city as None (except in Baltimore City), regardless of the location, as this helps with routing. Be sure to also set the city name of any alternate names correctly. Note that the Cities layer in the map editor shows CDPs and incorporated places from the 2000 census - changes made in the 2010 census and how it affects the map are discussed in this thread.

Road names and types

Formatting examples


  • I-97 N (generates shield in app)

US Routes

  • Split: US-113 N (occasionally generates shield in app)
  • Unsplit: US Hwy 113 (generates shield in app)

State Highways

  • Split: State Hwy 177 W (does not currently generate shield in app)
  • Unsplit: State Hwy 177 (generates shield in app)

County Highways

  • County route numbers are not posted on any signs in Maryland, but may be found as an alternate name on some segments in the editor and can be deleted.


  • When a state route number is part of a ramp name, format it as MD-###:
  • Exit 43: MD-157 / Peninsula Expy & MD-158 / Bethlehem Blvd

Special Routes

  • Alternate, Business, Detour, Scenic, Spur, and Truck are used in Maryland.
  • Abbreviate suffixes for primary names but not for alternate names:
  • Primary Name: State Hwy 404 Alt, US-50 Bus W (use all capitals?)
  • Alternate Name: State Hwy 3 Business N

Cardinal Directions on Split Roads

  • Always include with the route number: I-495 E, State Hwy 200 W
  • Include when the road type is freeway and the road name is the primary name: Baltimore Washington Pkwy N
  • Under most circumstances, do not include when the road type is not freeway and the road name is the primary name: Crain Hwy (a split major highway that is US-301 N/S)


  • Do not use "Route" or abbreviated forms such as "Rte" or "Rt."
  • Some abbreviated words and the letters N, S, E, & W (when not an abbreviation for a direction) need to be followed with a period so they are pronounced correctly in the app:
  • Abbreviations for words such as Saint, which has the same abbreviation as Street: St. Paul St, St. Michaels Rd
  • Directional letters: Harry S. Truman Pkwy, W. B. & A. Rd

Choosing a primary name

Name versus Number

  • Interstates always have the route number as the primary name, with any names as an alternate name.
  • US Routes should use the name when there is a lot of development (and therefore a lot of house numbers) along the road.
  • Examples: Baltimore National Pike (US-40), Pulaski Hwy (US-40), Crain Hwy (US-301)
  • US Routes should use the number in rural areas or when the name is obscure or not commonly used.
  • Examples: US-50 (John Hanson Hwy, Ocean Gtwy), US-301 (Blue Star Memorial Hwy)
  • State highways should almost always use the name, unless it is a freeway or major highway with an obscure name, or there is no name.
  • Examples: Ritchie Hwy (State Hwy 2), State Hwy 10 (Arundel Expy), State Hwy 90 (Ocean City Expy), State Hwy 404 (Queen Anne's Hwy, Shore Hwy)

Multiple Route Numbers

  • Interstate route numbers trump US route numbers, and US route numbers trump Maryland route numbers.
  • If a primary route can be determined, then use one route, such as in these examples:
  • On the Capital Beltway, I-495 is the primary name and I-95 is an alternate name.
  • On the Baltimore Beltway, I-695 is the primary name and I-83 is an alternate name.
  • Around the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, US-50 is the primary name and US-301 is an alternate name.
  • If no primary route can be determined (which is very rare), then use both routes in the primary name. For example, the duplexed section of the Salisbury Bypass has the primary name US-13 N / US-50 W.

Most importantly, be consistent with your naming!

Special roads


  • Alleys should always be mapped if they have a name.
  • Alleys should always be mapped if they are the sole access to a home or business.
  • Alleys should always be set to "Private"
  • Alleys are normally mapped if they are acknowledged by the municipality.

If an alley does not meet the above criteria, mapping is optional. Leave the name field blank.

Non-drivable roads

Generally, if a path can't be driven on (e.g. Walking Trail, Pedestrian Boardwalk, Stairway, Railroad, Runway/Taxiway) then it not normally mapped. If it is mapped, it should not be connected to any roads. This is due to the way the routing engine works, as Waze will route users to drive on these "non-drivable" road types.

It is permitted to map Railroads since some users run Waze while on the train and contributing false data to the system. This false data has been known to effect drivers on adjacent roads. Railroads should be level -5 and locked at the highest level of the editor.

Closures and construction projects

See this thread in the Maryland forum for a list of long term road closures and changes to traffic flow that impact the Waze Map.

If you edit the map for a construction project or closure, please read Real time closures and post in the forum so other editors are aware of it. You should never delete a road segment or landmark simply because of construction or a closure.

Update Requests and Map Problems are useful tools in gathering information about the current state of a road and diagnosing problems. Missing Road and Missing Junction map problems may persist for days or weeks after the closure of a road because of outdated drives and GPS tracks, but can be marked Solved if you are certain this is the reason for them.

Speed and red light cameras

Both Speed and Red Light Cameras are legal in Maryland, and are accompanied by a "Photo Enforced" sign. See How to Identify & Edit Cameras for more information.

Speed cameras

Speed cameras are authorized for use in the following areas: school zones throughout the state, work zones on freeways and major highways, and on streets in Montgomery County. Speed cameras can be mounted to a pole, concealed in a metal cabinet on the ground, or mounted on a trailer or vehicle parked on the shoulder, such as these used in work zones. Most speed cameras in Maryland will not issue a ticket unless the vehicle is exceeding the speed limit by at least 12 mph; however, when setting the speed of a camera in the editor, use the speed limit of the road.

Many speed cameras in school zones are portable and moved on a regular basis, in some cases weekly. This is usually indicated on the website and may include a rotation schedule. These reported camera locations should not be on the map. However, if the speed camera is not portable or is not moved on a regular basis, then it should be on the map.

Red light cameras

Red light cameras are authorized for use throughout the state. Please note that each red light camera fixture only records violations in one direction, so be sure to check which direction(s) are enforced, and include a camera in the editor for each applicable direction.

Some red light cameras also include radar, and enforce speed limits. This is especially true in Baltimore City.

The Wiki page for Waze Cameras states that, Speed limits "can also be set for a Red Light Camera if it monitors for Speed Limit Violations as well. Leave set to blank if speed is not monitored." However, this function has not been confirmed in the client.

Other camera types

These are cameras or signs that either provide driver feedback or are used for traffic control. These devices cannot issue tickets and should not be mapped.

Camera location lists

These lists are posted for your reference but should not be used to justify the approval of cameras in the editor without first verifying the location and type of camera by other means, and that it is not part of a school zone speed camera program in a jurisdiction where the cameras are relocated on a regular basis. The lists may not be up to date, and may include all locations where cameras are permitted but does not mean that a camera is present at that location at all times.


Places is the Waze Point of Interest (POI) system. Places supports two types of POIs: Point and Area. Maryland editors should follow the Places Wiki for guidance in regards to mapping Points of Interest & Businesses.


Obsolete Landmarks are non-road features that appear as polygons in the app. They are useful as navigation aids but should be limited in number and detail to avoid cluttering the map. Landmarks should follow the guidelines from Connecticut/Landmarks until the national standards are complete. In general:

  • Do not snap the landmark to roads since it makes them difficult to edit, and do not cover roads with the landmark unless they are a functional part of that landmark since it may suppress traffic and error reports.
  • Keep the shape of the landmark as simple as possible (try to keep the number of nodes below 20 in most cases) since they are simplified to basic shapes when shown in the app anyway.
  • Do not create landmarks for parking lots or garages serving businesses - only park & rides, private paid parking, and municipal parking should be mapped. If a landmark is appropriate for the feature the parking area serves, then it should typically include the feature and parking area in the same landmark.
  • Existing landmarks with a large number of nodes may cause errors when trying to save edits to them. See this thread for a discussion.
  • A list of bridges and tunnels to landmark is TBD.
  • Do not create landmarks for businesses, though roads serving the business may be mapped. The landmarking and updating of businesses is already handled through other search engines (such as Google and Foursquare).
  • Landmarks will appear in the search results in the app, and Waze will route you to the road closest to the centroid of the landmark (the white circle that lets you grab and move the landmark), which is sometimes not the best place to access that landmark. Therefore, when dealing with very large landmarks (such as BWI Airport), it may be better to make two landmarks - one that is not named and covers the whole area of the landmark, and a smaller one that is named and is located around the entrance.

Gas stations

See this thread for information regarding gas station landmarks. Unlike other businesses, gas stations are mapped since they are essential to drivers and used for the gas price feature. When renaming the station, TBD and use Title Case. Do not delete a gas station landmark if it is closed only for renovation and plans to reopen.

To do list

Want to help out with the map in Maryland? Major tasks to be accomplished include:

  • Applying the correct city names to roads and landmarks, eliminating the plethora of small community names. Also, identifying changes to CDPs in the 2010 census and eventually getting the city layer updated to reflect this.
  • Ensuring that route numbers and road names on state-maintained highways are consistently set and formatted correctly, in preparation for the display of alternate names and route shields in the app.
  • Verifying that ramps have complete and properly formatted names that reflect currently posted guide signs.
  • Mapping parking lots only where necessary to provide a basic representation for correct means of egress, and setting the correct road type and city name. Also, cleaning up those parking lots that have excessive segments and nodes.
  • Setting gas station landmarks to the actual location and property size, and checking for complete and correct information (such as the address).
  • Reviewing landmark standards first, then according to those standards, adding those that should be on the map, correcting the name and shape of existing ones, and deleting others that should not be on the map (such as businesses).
  • Checking for the presence of house numbers, adding them where missing, and placing stop points at the correct location, in preparation for their use in the app. They are missing from many major and divided highways, as well as at shopping centers and other large buildings with multiple addresses. Also, setting the stop points of house numbers to other streets as needed, when this feature is implemented.
  • In rural areas, removing unnecessary driveways and nodes, assigning the correct directionality to segments, and identifying primary streets.
  • Setting time-restricted turns (especially in Baltimore City) and the appropriate turn and segment restrictions for trucks when this feature is implemented.

Road names

Use these state-wide maps for the names and numbers of Interstate, US, and State highways. They also include the names of many local roads.

Use this tool to identify street addresses. MD Dept of Planning recommends Firefox for this mapping application, however Chrome works well too). Under the Contents tab, check Parcel Boundaries and uncheck all other options. Navigate to a property and click it, then click SDAT URL in the popup for the Real Property page. Note that the base map is copyrighted, but an alternate version is available with a base map that is not copyrighted.

Counties and cities

Use these maps for the names of local roads and smaller streets not identified on the state maps. Some also provide house numbers.


Searching for the name of a residential community or shopping center may also yield information from the developer's official website regarding street names and house numbers.
